What’s new at The Sod Guy?

Last year we announced the Grand Opening of a new location in Colorado Springs and we look forward to continuing to serve the Colorado Springs community this year.

This year we are spending time investigating new sod blends to introduce in the future to help with the overall market changes that are asking for blends that will conserve more water. In the mean time we have introduced a seed in our blend that will assist in water conservation and have rebranded our blend as a Colorado Hybrid Bluegrass. The blend does extremely well in Colorado but it is important to understand that no matter what blend you are wanting, the most important part of the water conservation issue is properly prepared soil prior to installing the sod. Our soils are not great in Colorado with compacted clay and sandy soils and neither do well with water retention. Therefore, proper soil amendment using a minimum of 4 yards per 1000 square feet of a good organic high in nutrient compost, rototilled into your existing soil 4-6 inches deep is very important. The Sod Guy uses this amount of compost in all of our installations as a standard. If you are getting bids for your sod project, make sure everybody you are talking to is telling you they will be amending your soil. This is a common part of the process where some contractors will take short cuts.

We have changed our website. Take a look at the new website at www.thesodguy.com. We didn’t make drastic changes since we have always received positive feedback on our site but we did make some changes that we believe will make things easier for our customers.

We now have a few Reference Documents that have been written for our customers based on areas we see are needing further explanation. We can email these documents to you upon your request. The following is a list of documents that are currently available. Click the title below to view the document that interests you.

When is the best time to install sod?

Now that spring is here, this is a good time to address one of our most common questions we get from customers.

When is the best time to install sod?

Although you can install sod anytime during the harvesting season which is typically April – mid November, there are better times than others if you want to keep your water bill during the establishment period at a minimum, Spring and Fall would be the best times to install since they are the cooler months of the season. The establishment period for new sod is 3 weeks. During that time you need to keep consistent moisture throughout the area and don’t let the sod dry out to ensure a good establishment. We provide full detail instructions to our customers on how to accomplish this. Since spring and fall are cooler months you will use less water during this time but it will still be more than you would typically use on an established lawn. You can install sod all season long but you will use more water during the warmer months during the establishment period because water will be lost due to evaporation. The Sod Guy can help you with your project no matter what time of season it is and we’ll give you instructions on how to ensure you are successful.

Got pallets and compost bags laying around???

If you still have pallets and compost bags that you have been meaning to return, this is the year to get them returned. This season we need to make a change to our pallet and compost bag return process. We are still offering refunds for the return of your branded Sod Guy pallets and undamaged compost bags. However we have implemented a new credit card charging system that has some limitations on refund timeframes. The new process requires all pallets and bags be returned during the season they were purchased to get the refund processed.
If you still have older Sod Guy pallets and bags sitting around, we will accept pallets and bags from previous years through the end of the 2024 season only.
