How often or how much should I be watering in high temperatures?

Whether you have new sod or an established lawn, the watering amounts will need to be adjusted as the temperature fluctuates. We often see homeowners set their watering timers and then forget to reevaluate as the weather changes. Making this mistake can be detrimental to your lawn. Smart clocks are great resources to use to avoid this concern. It is important to watch the lawn and respond accordingly, especially in high heat. Keep an eye out for signs that your lawn is “thirsty”. If you start seeing the blades turn a blueish/purplish tint before starting to turn yellow give it more water immediately. Kentucky Blue Grass is very resilient and will likely bounce back even after it has turned yellow if an appropriate amount of water is provided. It is an urban myth that watering your lawn in the middle of a hot day will burn the lawn. Sometimes the lawn will need water at the peak of a hot day, and it will benefit your lawn to get a “drink.” If you have any additional watering questions and/or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Summer is here!

We often get the question, “Can I install sod in the middle of Summer?” The answer is Yes, you absolutely can install sod in the middle of summer. The only down side to installing in the middle of summer is you will likely use more water during the 3 week establishment period since it is important to keep your new sod wet while it is trying to establish.

Proper soil amendment and preparation will be critical this time of year to ensure the water is being utilized efficiently. A proper amended soil and preparation will keep the water at the root zone longer where it belongs resulting in less water usage.

Make sure you know what your city and county requirements are for installing new sod. Many of them are requiring permits now to lay new sod. They want to ensure you are preparing your soil correctly because they know how important this step is to conserve water.

What do I need to know about dogs and new sod?

Colorado is a big, dog-loving state! We love your dogs as much as you do but it is important to note that your pups must stay off the sod for a minimum of three weeks after install. The following three weeks after the establishment period is crucial for the sod to root. After the first three weeks the sod should be rooted but still somewhat fragile. We recommend continuing to minimize the dog traffic for another 3 weeks (for a total of 6 weeks). It will allow the root system to continue to thrive.

Large dogs will need to refrain from the grass for longer because they can be very hard on your lawn. Dog urine is very high in Nitrogen. Nitrogen is an ingredient in fertilizer to help green up the lawn, but if you use too much fertilizer it will burn the grass. There are products on the market to help neutralize the dog urine, but it will be a trial and error for your dog. If it would be possible to train your dog to do its business in the same location each time to avoid killing several spots. You can also try to wet your lawn after each time your dog pees on it to dilute it. Revive has also put out a product specifically for dog stains.

How do I handle weeds?

Little weeds or big weeds, we recommend that you treat them the same. If there is an area taken over that you would like to lay fresh sod, consider treating them with an herbicide and removing them prior to laying the fresh sod. If the weeds are not sprayed, they could potentially re-root and begin to thrive again on all the water during the establishment period. If the sod successfully roots during the establishment period, it will do a good job choking out the weeds all on its own in the future.

What do I do if my sod is heavily shaded?

Our blend contains specific seeds to help the sod to thrive in shaded areas, but it will still need sunlight. If you have big, beautiful shade tree(s) that don’t allow any sun in the area, your lawn can start to thin out exposing the dirt below. Overtime the sod will not look thick and lush anymore. Consider trimming your tree(s) to allow more sunlight. Areas that don’t get any sun throughout the day will have a tough time thriving, regardless. If you are getting some sun but not a whole lot and the area is still thinning, over seed with our Shady Place blend to introduce other grass types that will do better in shaded areas.
