Where has the summer gone?? This summer has been absolutely beautiful and it looks like that will continue as we see summer change to fall.
The daylight grows shorter, and temperature starts becoming cooler. Fall is generally regarded as the end of the growing season, but there is still a lot to think about regarding your lawn. See our newsletter below, to obtain seasonal information, helpful hints, and maintenance instructions tailored to the changing of the seasons.
How about all this Rain!!!
This year has been great with all the moisture we have seen. New sod loves the rain and customers who installed sod this year really benefited from Mother Natures help.
When installing sod it is more important than ever to ensure you prepare your soil correctly prior to installing the sod. Because new sod requires a lot of water during its 3 week establishment period, proper soil preparation will ensure it utilizes the water it receives as efficiently as possible. Simply rototilling your existing soil to loosen it up prior to installing sod is not enough to ensure a successful lawn and minimizing the water consumption.

Many cities and counties are requiring 4 yards per 1000 square feet of compost rototilled 4-6 inches deep into the existing soil for a proper amendment. Historically, The Sod Guy was using 3-4 yards but because of market changes and best practice recommendations we will be using a minimum of 4 yards of compost per 1000 square feet on all of our jobs. We want to ensure that we are complying with all the recommendations for soil amendment and preparation since we believe this is the most important part of the installation process. This will allow your soil to utilize the water more efficiently and ultimately giving you a beautiful lawn that you can enjoy for many years to come. If the rain slows down, you will have a properly amended soil that will benefit you when the water is not as easily available. Our blend will also do well in a higher drought situation in a properly amended soil and should bounce back nicely when the water is more available in the future.
Our web site offers the Do It Yourself customers with pointers on how to measure your yard as well as how to prepare and amend the soil prior to installing the sod.

Fall FAQ’s
Is it too late to install sod?
Sod needs a 3 week runway to establish. As long as we are getting warm weather and you can water during this 3 week window, the sod will establish and do fine. It will be important during the winter to do some winter watering if there is not much moisture and we are having warm days. Since your sprinkler system will likely be turned off in the winter you’ll need to do this by hand.
Is Fall a good time to seed?
Fall is a good time to seed and overseed a lawn.
Seed is a lot like new sod when it comes to the care. It will take 2-3 weeds to germinate and the area needs to stay moist during this time for the seed to germinate. Overseeding is good in areas that are struggling. Be sure to rake the area to loosen up the soil below and spread the seed. Put down a quarter of an inch of a good amended top soil to cover the seed and protect it from birds and wind. Keep the area consistently moist. This may take 2 to 3 watering’s a day depending on temperature. Once the seed germinates continue watering until the grass reaches the height of the existing grass. This should make it healthy enough to survive the winter.
Should I aerate my yard in the fall?
Now is a great time to aerate your lawn. Aerating allows oxygen, water and nutrients to get to the root zone which promotes deeper root systems and an overall healthier lawn. BUT remember if you just installed your lawn this year you want to wait at least six months before aerating new sod.
When should I winterize my lawn?
