Sod Market Changes
The Sod Guy is excited for the 2023 season. As our market is changing with more strict water restrictions and cities and counties restricting the amount of grass that is allowed in new developments, as well as offering rebates to home owners to tear out their grass and Xeriscape their yards in order to preserve water, The Sod Guy has added a necessary seed blend in order to help with this overall effort. We have branded our sod as Colorado Hybrid Bluegrass.
Although Kentucky Bluegrass is getting a bad name as a thirsty grass type and is not being allowed in some cities and counties, we believe that some key attributes to Kentucky Bluegrass are important to stay in our blend in order to offer a sod for drought tolerance, durability, deep green color and thick soft texture. Our blend now has a seed that helps with water conservation. The blend has always had seeds to assist in drought tolerance, disease control, heavy sun durability, shade durability and deep green color. Our blend will bounce back nicely from more of a long term drought unlike other grass types which will not do well in long term droughts but do ok in shorter term droughts. It is important to understand that it is not only the grass type that needs to be considered in order to preserve water. Proper soil preparation before laying sod is a must to achieve the water conservation that is desired. A poor soil base will result in more water consumption for a green lawn. We believe our blend is a quality blend to achieve the requirements of conserving water while satisfying the customer with a beautiful lush lawn that is very pleasing to the eye.
Early Spring Sod
Keep in mind that the sod in early spring is still coming out of dormancy. Therefore, the sod is more yellow than green this time of year. Don’t be concerned because with proper maintenance the sod will establish and green up nicely throughout the spring.
Power Raking and Aeration
Spring is here and it’s time to start getting ready for the summer months. We have been getting a lot of questions about when to power rake for thatch and when to aerate. Aeration can be better for lawns versus power raking because power raking can damage good grass as well as dethatching the area. We recommend if you have a bad thatch problem to thatch in early spring but don’t aerate at the same time. Power raking in the early spring will allow enough growing season to help your lawn recover from any damage it incurs from the power raking. If you don’t have a bad thatch problem elect to aerate instead. Aeration also helps with thatch and helps drive the oxygen and water to the root system. We recommend aerate a minimum of twice a season to promote a healthy lawn. Once in early spring and again in the early fall for best results.
Fertilizing
Fertilizing in early spring is a good practice as your lawn is starting to actively grow. The ground should at least be about 55 degrees and the lawn should get some water a couple days prior to fertilization and as well as after the fertilizer is applied. Don’t over soak the area after application. A light watering is sufficient to help the fertilizer absorb into the soil. We recommend fertilization not anymore than every 6-8 weeks. However, if your lawn is looking nice and lush you could probably skip a fertilization. If it appears to be struggling apply the fertilizer.
