Did you install sod this late summer or fall?

The Sod Guy introduced a new grass product called Dog Tuff in 2024. Dog Tuff was selected in order to have a product that would accommodate the WaterWise movement in Colorado. It was our first year with it and we have learned a lot about the product.

If you just recently installed sod, the root zone may not be as deep as it wants to be. Be mindful of the weather and if you have a sprinkler system, be sure to insulate the backflow if freezing weather is forecasted. This can be done by wrapping the backflow with an insulation blanket. Once the weather warms up you can remove it and begin watering your new sod again. There is no need to worry too early about the sprinkler water lines since a deep freeze will likely not happen until the mid November to December time frame. A deep freeze is defined as temperatures 28 degrees or lower for an extended period of time. This is the time that sprinkler water lines will likely freeze and therefore should be blown out prior to deep freezes.

Some common questions we get about late summer or fall sod installations:

  1. Is it too late to install sod? The weather here in Colorado can be very unpredictable so it makes this question a little tricky to answer. Sod needs a 3 week window to get its roots established deep enough to where it won’t pull up with minor traffic. Historically in Colorado installing sod through mid October has been ok, but again the weather can be unpredictable so this is not a guarantee. If Mother Nature decides to move in early and send the signals to the grass that it’s time to go to sleep, there is a small chance that root activity can stop and not get established before the winter sets in. If this occurs, the sod will need extra care over the winter with trying to keep it moist through the dry winter days to prevent rolls from drying and shrinking over the winter. If you’re able to keep some moisture in the sod over the winter, the sod will start to get established the following spring. If no attention is given to it over the winter, there is a chance of losing the sod.
  2. Will my sod die if it freezes after we install it? No, the root activity will be temporarily paused until the weather warms up again and the roots will continue to work to dig in. Once the freeze burns off continue watering per the 3 week establishment guidance we provide.
  3. Will my sod die if we get snow in the fall? No, actually as the snow starts to melt as the weather warms up again, it will assist you in your watering requirements for the new sod. New sod thrives on fresh snow when it melts. Once the snow is gone continue with your watering recommendations if you are in your 3 week establishment period.
  4. Do I need to do anything over the winter to prepare for the spring? Applying a winterizer fertilizer will prepare the new grass with essential nutrients to help it get through the winter. Winter watering is also recommended to help prevent spider mites from infesting your lawn and killing it. A little water on hot dry winter days helps with getting the lawn ready for spring and prevents the spider mites from moving in.

Find the Perfect Sod for Your Lawn

As your trusted local sod company, we’re excited to share how we’ve grown and evolved over the past couple of years to better serve your landscaping needs. We’ve expanded our inventory significantly, introducing high-quality options like Tall Fescue and Dog Tuff Plugs to complement our established lineup. This year and into next, our core products—Colorado Hybrid Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Dog Tuff Plugs—offer versatile solutions for creating lush, resilient lawns. Whether you’re starting a new yard or revitalizing an existing one, our expanded selection ensures there’s a perfect sod type for every environment, lifestyle, and preference. Let’s explore these options and their standout benefits to help you make an informed choice.

Colorado Hybrid Bluegrass stands out as a premium choice tailored for challenging climates, blending the best traits of traditional bluegrasses for superior performance. This custom hybrid boasts excellent drought resistance thanks to its deep root system, allowing it to thrive with less water than standard Kentucky Bluegrass varieties. It’s also highly heat tolerant, making it ideal for sunny spots that endure summer highs without fading or browning. Additionally, its disease resistance and ability to handle a variety of soil conditions reduce maintenance headaches, while its wear tolerance suits high-traffic areas like family yards or play spaces. If you’re seeking a vibrant, green lawn that stays lush with minimal effort, this hybrid is a game-changer.

One of our exciting recent additions, Tall Fescue, brings robust adaptability to our inventory, quickly becoming a favorite for homeowners looking for low-maintenance reliability. This cool-season grass excels in both heat and cold, with deep roots that provide exceptional drought tolerance and help it access moisture even during dry spells. Its shade tolerance is a major plus for yards with trees or structures casting shadows, where other grasses might struggle. Tall Fescue requires less fertilizer and water overall, resists common diseases, and forms a dense, deep-green turf that withstands heavy foot traffic without thinning. Perfect for busy households, it offers a beautiful, resilient lawn that demands fewer resources to keep looking its best year-round.

We’re also proud to highlight Dog Tuff Plugs, another innovative addition to our expanded lineup, designed specifically for pet owners and active outdoor lifestyles. We are currently working on getting Dog Tuff into sod form we will have more updates on that this spring. This drought-tolerant warm-season grass uses up to 90% less water than traditional turfs once established, making it an eco-friendly option for water-conscious gardeners. Its standout feature is exceptional resistance to dog urine and heavy foot traffic, preventing those unsightly brown spots and wear patterns that plague other lawns. With deep roots that create a nearly weed-proof barrier, Dog Tuff is soft underfoot, requires minimal mowing and fertilizer, and loves the heat without needing constant care. It’s a durable, low-maintenance choice that keeps your yard playable and pristine, even with furry friends in the mix.

With these expanded options, selecting the right sod has never been easier—consider factors like your local climate, sun exposure, soil type, and daily use to match the perfect variety. For instance, if water conservation is a priority, all three of our featured products shine with their efficient hydration needs. Our team’s expertise ensures you get sod that’s fresh, healthy, and ready to root deeply for long-lasting results.
